He enlisted in the Confederate Army on December 31, 1861, a few months before his sixteenth birthday, serving first in Company C, 43d Mississippi Infantry Regiment and then in Company D, John D. Morgan's Regiment, 51st Alabama Cavalry. He saw action in Tennessee.
