- Recto: Hampton Institute Battalion. Hampton Institute, Va.; Verso: Post card. Hampton Institute, situated two miles from Fort Monroe, Virginia, was founded by General S.C. Armstrong in 1868 for the practical education of Negro youth. Indians were admitted in 1878. It began with two teachers and fifteen students. It now has over 2200 students, (including the training and summer schools and extension classes), 250 teachers and other workers, 150 buildings, and 1000 acres of land. It has the following courses: Secondary--Academy and Trade School; Advanced--Builders', Business, and Home-Economics; Collegiate--Agriculture and Normal. Its students go out as teachers, farmers, skilled mechancis, home-makers, and other leaders in their communities, creating centers of influence for the development of their races. It is supported mainly by voluntary contributions. Annual Scholarship, $100; Permanent Scholarship, $2500. Any amount, however small, is gratefully received. James E. Gregg, D.D., principal. Frank K.
