Description / Abstract:
Recto: SA.66, Old slave market, St. Augustine, Fla., Oldest city in the United States; Verso: A public market was established in the plaza of St. Augustine, Florida, by the Spanish Governor de Canzo in 1598, together with a standard system of weights and measures, operating here until late in the 19th century. Minutes of the City Council 1821-1861 show that a few slaves were bought and sold there. Present structure is a replica of one burned in 1887.
