- Verso: Metropolitan Opera House. Photo by Martinus Anderson. 1936. N.Y.C. Primitive dance. 'Life and Death.' Hemsley Winfield (center) and group of Negro dancers. Opera Emperor Jones with Paul Robeson [This inscription on the verso is incorrect that Paul Robeson performed with Winfield in the opera The Emperor Jones and that Winfield and his company performed Life and Death at the Metropolitan Opera House. The inscription is also incorrect about the date of the production depicted, which likely took place in 1931 instead of 1936, as Winfield died in 1934.]
