Description / Abstract:
Verso: June 30, 1931. Ol Man Ribber--Washin' them sins away. Wash. D.C. ... Thousands of interested spectators watching these eighty colored believers in the old-fashioned gospel, wade into the waters of the Potomac River to take part in the time-honored ceremony which attends the wholesale baptism. Each follower in turn gets his prayer and ducking which is to cleanse him (or her) from sin. A radio microphone nearby gave the sacred ceremony a modern touch as Elder Lightfoot Michaux, pastor of the gospel spreading association went through the ritual. The white robed in the water seemed more confortable than the spectators on the banks. (E-June 22-31) Jun. 30, 1931, daily, [clock stamp]
