Description / Abstract:
Recto: Peter Williams; Verso: Peter Williams. Peter Williams was a slave, bought in 1783 for 40 pounds sterling, by the Trustees of John Street Methodist Church who installed him as sexton. He bought his liberty, set up a business of his own, and became prosperous. He was converted under Embury and Webb in the Rigging Loft. He and his wife helped to obtain subscriptions for the building of the first church for Negroes in New York - Zion Methodist Episcopal Church - in 1801. Post card, Place stamp here
