Description / Abstract:
Verso: Peter Williams - 1748-1824. One of the first converts to Methodism in the New World, converted at a meeting held in Philip Embury's home 1768. Sold as a slave in 1783, to the Trustees of John Street Church, (Wesley's Chapel) for $40.00. Worked as Sexton of the church. Purchased his freedom 1785. Was one of the founders of A.M.E. Zion Church. Laid corner stone in 1801 for Mother Zion Church, located at Church and Leonard Street, which was under the spiritual supervision of John Street Church for approximately 25 years.
