Description / Abstract:
Little Bo-Peep and Her Foolish Sheep, from a drawing by John H. Goater [?], Strong's Dime Caricatures (No. 2), New York, circa 1861. The second in a series of caricatures criticizing the secession of several Southern states from the Union during the last months of the Buchanan administration. Bo-Peep, representing the Union, tries to protect the sheep (two of which are labeled Virginia and Kansas). Seven of the sheep (representing the states that seceded) flee into a Palmetto forest full of wolves representing the European powers. An old dog "Hickory" (Andrew Jackson) lies dead in the grass while another, "Old Buck" (James Buchanan), flees toward the left.
