Description / Abstract:
Recto: Philadelphia, Penna., January 18, 1977, Sarah Jane Alston, daughter of the late Tina and Izekiah Richardson was born December 25, 1878 in Savannah, Georgia. She spent her early life in Savannah, after being freed from slavery, where she met and married the late Damon Alston. From this marriage, 13 children were born. She also taught public school and Sunday School in her hometown. After being a widow for 2 1/2 years, she decided to move her family to Philadelphia in 1921. She was both mother and father to her family and buried six of them here. During her years in Philadelphia, while raising her children alone, she was very active in various organizations, until she could no longer participate. She was a member of Keystone Marching Club, Knights of Columbus, Eastern Stars, Reindeers and was a Red Cross volunteer. All during her life, she was in the best of health, until Saturday, January 1st, when she became ill and was taken to Jefferson Hospital. She departed this life, Sunday, January 9th at 8:15 p.m. She leaves to mourn her loss, 4 daughters, 2 sons, 29 grandchildren, 45 great grandchildren, 8 great great grandchildren, 3 son-in-laws, 3 daugher-in-laws, and a host of friends and neighbors.; Verso: Cousin Ursa, Merry Christmas and a happy new year, Liz Charles, Hedrick & Ira, 12/15/51 [photo of Cousin Vera and photo of a baby]
