Verso: War Department Public Relations Division, Washington, D.C. for immediate release, (Press Section). Battalion receives distinguished unit badge--November 26 was a great day for the 969th Field Artillery Battalion of the 5th Field Artillery Group, stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Units of the battalion received the Distinguished Unit Badge for their outstanding action in the defense of Bastogne, Belgium, during the Battle of the Bulge. Receiving the decorations for their units are the battery commanders and first sergeants of each battery. They are, left to right: Captain Max W. Riley, Service Battery; Captain Lewis A. Shuford, Battery B; First Lieutenant William J. Slayman, Battery A; First Lieutenant Leo A. Petitbon, Headquarters Battery; First Sergeant Reid H. Ridley, Battery B, and First Sergeant Phillip Jones, Battery A. Presenting the awards, left to right: Colonel John F. Bird, commanding officer of the 5th FA Group; Major Judson R.
