About This Collection
Description / Abstract:
The Samuel Ajayi Crowther and Western African Christianity in the Nineteenth Century collection gathers materials by and about the first African Anglican bishop and a pivotal figure in the history of Christianity in Western Africa, Samuel Ajayi Crowther. Crowther was both a linguist and a scholar, who contributed to the first translation of the Bible in the Yoruba language and authored the first book on the Igbo language. Notably, Crowther held tension between being a native of Yorubaland while promoting the implementation of British Victorian ideals through his missionary work. The materials in this collection include works on translation by Crowther and one of his associates, James Frederick Schön, missionary work, and early works about Bishop Crowther, and represent a small fraction of the Pitts Theology Library holdings on African Christianity.
